Underdogs and Champions

With the pro football playoffs coming up, there will soon be a lot of talk about “underdogs” – teams that are clearly outmatched and have little chance of coming out on top. In a way, it can be fun rooting for the little guy and hoping for a major upset. But most of the time, the underdog doesn’t win. The simple truth is that people would much rather cheer for champions, the ones who have earned their place at the top through hard work and consistent excellence.

So what do you do when there’s a battle to fight and the odds appear to be heavily against you? This type of narrative is nothing new – we see it play out in biblical history between David and Goliath as well as Gideon and the Midianites. Individually, David and Gideon were fairly small, weak, and unimportant by the world’s standards. But these supposed underdogs had confidence that they would win because they knew they were playing on a stacked team; they had the strength of God behind them. They listened to God, they trusted in God, and they did what God asked them to do. That’s how they became champions, and we can follow that same model today.

According to the most recent betting odds, evil has a 0 percent chance of claiming victory in the end. It appears to be winning, and we have an entire culture cheering loudly for it. But this upset victory isn’t going to happen, and it’s no fun playing on a team that’s about to get obliterated. As we start 2023, now is a perfect time to get on the right team and start thinking and acting more like champions.
